Some notes on what this means for students:

Coursework 2–Production 2: VFX for 3D character animation + In-Class work presentation

This coursework assesses the following Learning Outcomes of the module:

LO2:analyse and critically evaluate VFX requirements and identify possible problems;

LO4:demonstrate competency, confidence and an advanced level of creativity and skill by designing and implementing believable (eye catching) VFXs;

LO5:integrate diverse tools and techniques to realise creative ideas in terms of VFX realism, dynamics, materials/textures, target audience and purpose;

LO6:develop effective oral, visual and written communication skills via presentations, reports and demonstrations.

Coursework Introduction

This coursework enables you to develop your skills in improving and refining your applied VFX and for making a breakdown video of the VFX implementation process.

In your 2ndcoursework, you are to use relevant tools to improve the reality level of your VFX implementation and make a breakdown video of 120 seconds.

Instructions

For this VFX coursework, here’s a structured approach to help you complete the project:

1. Refinement of Existing VFX

  • Review Previous Work: Analyze the VFX you applied in your previous coursework to identify areas that can be improved or refined.
  • Tool Application: Utilize tools like rigid/soft bodies, gravity, dynamics/particles, and fields to enhance the effects. Focus on adding more realism or creativity to the scene.

2. Addition of a New Character-Based Effect

  • Select an Effect: Choose a new character-based effect to add, such as cloth simulation, blood, sweat, or another appropriate effect.
  • Implement the Effect: Use relevant simulation tools to apply the effect to your character. Ensure that the new effect integrates seamlessly with the existing VFX.

3. Lighting, Materials, and Textures

  • Lighting: Set up proper lighting to enhance the mood and realism of the scene. Consider using a combination of key, fill, and rim lights for depth.
  • Materials and Textures: Apply high-quality materials and textures to all objects in the scene. Ensure that textures are properly UV-mapped and shaders are appropriately set for realism.

4. Rendering and Compositing

  • Render the Scene in layers: Render the final scene in layers and render pass, making sure to use the correct settings for quality and resolution.
  • Compositing: Composite the rendered frames to finalize the visual effects using all render passes. Add any additional enhancements such as color correction, motion blur, or other post-processing effects.

5. Breakdown Video

  • Create Playblasts: Record playblasts of different stages of your VFX process. This could include before-and-after shots, specific effects being applied, and the integration of the new character-based effect.
  • Compile Breakdown: Edit these playblasts into a 120-second breakdown video, clearly showing the evolution of your VFX work.
  • Include Explanations: Consider adding text overlays or voiceovers to explain what’s being shown in each part of the breakdown.

6. Final Video

  • Format: Export the final video in MP4 format using the H.264 codec, with a minimum resolution of 352×240.
  • YouTube Upload: Upload both the final video and the breakdown video to YouTube. Ensure the links are accessible.

7. Final Submission

  • Video Links: Include the YouTube links for both the final video and the breakdown video in your submission.
  • File Organization: Ensure all files in your drive are properly organized and named for easy access and review.

This approach will help you refine your VFX work and successfully complete the coursework requirements.
